Procession
This website accompanies Jeremy Deller’s public event Procession that took place along Deansgate in central Manchester at 2pm on Sunday 5 July 2009. Commissioned and produced by Manchester International Festival and Cornerhouse. With participants drawn from across Greater Manchester, Procession represents what Deller describes as ‘northern social surrealism’, combining social clubs, special interest groups, popular music and invited individuals with traditional processional stalwarts such as Rose Queens and brass bands. Films
The above film has been produced by Lets Go Global & Global Youth with different people from across Greater Manchester.
Called Last of the Industrial Revolution, it recalls reflective memories of mill workers from Rochdale & Bolton.
Lets Go Global also produced other films about some of the participants:
Rose Queens from Trafford & Stockport give us the ins and outs of what it takes to be a Rose Queen and the important charity work they do in local communities.
The Blackout Crew, a group of eight young people from various areas of Bolton talk about their music, cars, Harmony Media Centre, and their involvement in Procession.
North West Film Archive
During the research of Procession we came across the amazing resources of North West Film Archive, Manchester Metropolitan University. With their kind permission this site will be showing highlights of a small selection of the films that initially inspired Jeremy for Procession. They show the wealth of history surrounding processions and parades from Greater Manchester.
Exhibition
You will be able to view these films in their entirety through the exhibition at Cornerhouse that accompanies this project. Information on the exhibition is available on this site. It will run from 9 July to 30 August 09.
Website
In addition to the archive footage we are inviting you to join the network and add your films, photographs or memories of parades or processions in your local area. North West Film Archive are particularly interested in what footage you might have and possibly put in their archive. If you would like to donate your films to the North West Film Archive you can contact them via this website.
